Forbidden in France, MMA (Mixed Martial Art), more commonly known as Free Fight, is a rising worldwide phenomenon. The UFC, equivalent of the FFF for soccer, is a franchise that represents 1 billion dollars in the USA. Each broadcast of the monthly Championships rake up a massive 5 million dollars solely through pay per view on the US territory. In France, “UFC Undisputed 2009”, a Sony free fight video game, sold 50000 copies in a few hours the day of its release…
The MMA thus seems to present all characteristics of a social phenomenon still misunderstood by public authorities. Is it a representation of the violence of our era? Or is it the resurgence of a form of physical expression as old as the world? Is the MMA a moral sport? Is it even a sport at all? Is it a battle without rules or perhaps simply a mixture of several varieties of perfectly regulated fights? Are we even able to practice a sport without rules?
Several questions can be asked and the deliberating can be fascinating. Mike Tyson believes that in less than 5 years, free fighting will have completely killed the public’s interest for any other combat sport.
Tyson’s approach is somewhat radical. Nevertheless, sports professionals were able to observe the oncoming emptiness of the tatamis at the last Judo World Championships. Indeed, many judokas are more and more attracted to the spotlights, the money and the UFC free fight cages. An international MMA fighter can make up to 200 000 euros in one fight…. Which is obviously attractive…
Through Cyrille Diabate’s adventure, we shall try and find out more about this sport. Cyrille’s journey through the UFC shall bring us from Paris’s suburbs to Las Vegas passing by London. We shall meet the greatest stars of the sport, like Wanderleï Silva, Brazilian fighter and MMA legend, Cheikh Congo or even Dana White, president of the UFC.
We shall begin by retracing free fighting’s history throughout the ages, from the Ancient Olympics glory to its rebirth in the USA during the 1990’s.
It would be easy to be biased and accumulate arguments for one side or the other. We have decided, however, to remain neutral in order to allow the spectators to judge for themselves.
One thing is certain: free fighting is one of the evolutions of our world that we need to understand in order to integrate it correctly into our society.
Turning our backs to newness has indeed never been helpful. We must face it thoroughly and that is precisely what we offer with this documentary.
