| When the griot Naïny Diabaté decided to give Malian women a voice, the result was the Kaladjula Band, the first female instrumental ensemble in Mali.
Here, women aren’t just singers but in full possession of the instruments usually reserved for men.
Naïny Diabaté is now one of the most famous singers in Mali. Her powerful, husky voice gives her improvisations both a blues-rock and a traditional flavour.
The lyrics call for more equality and less conservatism in Malian society. Swept along by the frenetic beat, the melodic generosity and communicative energy of Naïny Diabaté explodes on stage.
Recorded at the Festival Des Détours de Babel on March 24th, 2019 |
