This film follows step by step dramatic days from January to April 1814: 4 critical months in the history of Europe and France, packed with great and small events, politics, war, death and betrayal.
The story of “la Campagne de France” explains Napoleon’s fall: a military defeat despite many victories, the moral fall of a man who tried to die in battle and then by poison, before going into exile on Elba after a total and unconditional abdication.
A reflection on the fragility of human loyalties, power and empires; a realistic psychological portrait that reveals the hidden face of a man who was, and still is, both loved and hated.

Alongside this, we shall follow the thoughts and actions of three major players in the drama, in three emblematic places: Eastern France, Fontainebleau and Paris.
- Armand de Caulaincourt, represented by Jacques-Olivier Boudon, professor of Napoleonic history at Paris IV.
- Alexander I, Emperor of Russia since 1801. An extreme mystic, convinced of being on a mission from God to save Europe. Marie-Pierre Rey, Russian history professor at the University of Paris I, knows everything about him.
- Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, head of the French provisional government, was Napoleon’s trusted advisor for many years. He ended up becoming his fiercest opponent. Emmanuel de Waresquiel, a world-renowned Talleyrand specialist, will tell us about him.

Explanations and arbitration by leading historians of the day will provide additional context outside this framework.

The future of Europe is at stake in a stunning game of military and political poker, in which no holds are barred.
