Born in Liège in 1741, André Modeste Grétry, was the uncontested star of the French Opera of the second half of the 18th century.
He arrived in Paris under the reign of Louis XIV, Grétry then became Marie-Antoinette's favorite composer, the musician of the revolution and Napoleon's protegé. What a carreer! Despite the fact that he was the most succesful composer of that period, his music had completely disapeared by the 19th century.
We had to wait till 2010 to hear his music echo once again in the gilded halls of Versailles. Grétry, A musician amidst the turmoil, is a man worth rediscovering.
