Faust, Toothy-Peg, Tramp and Rosa are just 4 of the 500 dogs, cats, horses and cattle who owe their lives to a very special refuge in Normandy, AVA (Aid for Old Animals), created by a man with a big heart and firm convictions, veterinary behaviourist Thierry Bedossa.
Many of these animals were destined for certain euthanasia for being either too old, disabled or aggressive. Sociality, spatial planning, behavioural rehabilitation... In this “Noah's Ark”, a dedicated team strives to offer the residents a new life. Healers, educators and animal ethologists combine their skills and use scientifically validated methods, incorporating the latest discoveries in ethology, to make AVA the only institution of its kind in France.
Will the team succeed in making Faust, a golden-retriever, less aggressive? Will Cuddles, the alley cat, be able to live without his master? Will Rosa the cross-breed bitch eventually find an adoptive family?
The film takes us behind the scenes of this unique refuge, introducing us to the people who work there, and the animals in their charge.
Following the lives of the team and their protégés, we are also examining our own humanity. Today, the place and changing status of animals is being questioned by the whole of society.
As many behavioural and social scientists have shown, changing our attitudes towards animals and their welfare can also help us to evolve as human beings.
