Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) : Missa solemnis op. 123
For Jordi Savall, the Missa Solemnis is "one of the most priceless treasures of the human spirit", and his aim in performing it was to "rediscover what is essential by returning to the autograph sources".
The Missa solemnis, one of the spirit's most incalculable treasures, composed between 1819 and 1823, "in which", as Romain Rolland so aptly puts it in his essential book on Beethoven, "a sovereign master of the art of sound has poured into it the deepest depths of his great soul, with absolute sincerity. It is, one might say, the Testament of his entire life, written at the peak of his life, in full vigor, and enriched by a poignant experience."
What has always fascinated Jordi Savall about Beethoven, "apart from the power of his language, is that his music speaks to every human being, regardless of origin, class or creed, and is no longer composed to satisfy exclusively the aristocratic or clerical elite…"
