“Les Surprises de l'Amour” premiered in Versailles on the Grand Escalier des Ambassadeurs of the brand new Théâtre des Petits Appartements on the 20th October 1748. It was commissioned by Madame de Pompadour to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, and featured the King’s official mistress in the roles of both Venus and Urania, thus reminding the whole court of her hold over Louis XV.
