Opera in 5 acts by Charles GOUNOD (1818-1893), first performed at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris on March 19, 1859 in a spoken dialogue version. The story is based on Goethe's play of the same name.
"The libretto is tragic, and the dramatic comedy is played out in increasingly sinister locations, right up to the gates of hell. But life abounds everywhere, with its joys, mourning, betrayals and defeats. I set the action in a hospital under construction in the 1960s. The hospital is an essential part of our existence, where we come together to repair our failing bodies and minds. It's where we're born and where we die.
