Repatriates from Indochina, recovered memories 54'  - 2025  - ALISAL Productions
    Synopsis

Noyant-d’Allier, a small village in the Bourbonnais region, began receiving repatriates from Indochina in the mid-1950s. This massive influx profoundly changed the history of this rural commune. These repatriates recount their arrival, their life in Noyant-d’Allier, their struggle for recognition of their status, and their dual cultural identity. A whole chapter of this early decolonization period is finally being brought to light.

July 21, 1954: the end of the Indochina War.

Ten thousand kilometers from Saigon, Noyant-d’Allier, a small village in the Bourbonnais region, has not yet grasped the impact this event will have on its future. How could anyone have imagined that its population would double within a few years, and that a profound sociological transformation would forever change the village?

Indeed, the end of this war marked the beginning of the large-scale repatriation of French citizens from Indochina: around 45,000 people returned to mainland France.

The French state struggled to manage this first wave of decolonization, and the most vulnerable among these returnees were urgently housed in reception camps. Noyant-d’Allier was one of them.

Here, a Vietnamese community was born—attached to its traditions, yet also seeking integration.

For 70 years, the struggle for recognition of their status as repatriates, often overlooked by the laws of the Republic, shaped their lives.

It is these repatriates, adopted inhabitants of Noyant, who tell us their stories—both universal and deeply personal. Through the testimonies of Julien, Marie, Jany, and many others, a whole chapter of this first wave of decolonization is finally being brought to light.
