Some strong personalities have emerged since bassists started fronting their own groups, with the other musicians accompanying their dum-dums and solos. Avishai Cohen has gone where nobody thought to go before: by going back to his Israeli roots and embellishing them with his light voice, he has created a jazz drawn from borders and traditions, combining songs, grooves and virtuosity, projecting from centre stage the melodic gravity that his double bass connects to the land of his ancestors.
