Brotherhood Heritage at the Rendez-vous de L’Erdre, Nantes
80' - 2016 - Heliox Films
Synopsis
A big band of the 1970s, Brotherhood of Breath lit up the European jazz scene. Stemming from a multiracial South African orchestra (formed despite apartheid), it produced a fusion of South African pop and improvised music created under the guidance of pianist Chris McGregor.
The project piloted by François Raulin and Didier Levallet provides another chance to hear these South African melodies and their numerous interpretations. The group brought together by the two co-leaders are the quintessence of several generations of jazz musicians. All share the desire to reconnect with this repertoire, which combines the powerful lyricism of the songs with the freedom of each performer.
