Artistic confessions on an absolute masterpiece of the post-Romantic repertoire that WARNER recorded for the first time: Mahler's titanic Symphony No. 2, a true orchestral vessel requiring at least 150 musicians and choristers as well as 2 singers. It was Paavo Jarvi, future conductor of the Paris Orchestra from the 2010-2011 season1, who had the task of recording it, with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, supplemented by the Spanish Basque Choir. Orféon Donostiarra, historic partner of EMI, notably with Michel Plasson for decades. And Warner joins the great tradition which distributes the short but superb soprano part to a great singer, here Natalie Dessay, alongside the mezzo soprano Alice Coote. Mahler's 2nd Symphony displays a force and energy that can only be matched by Mahler himself or Bruckner. Plunging to the depths of darkness and tragic meaning, it finally rebounds towards a grandiose finale which tears the mind from its pessimism to take it towards a mystical apotheosis which leaves the listener speechless.
