Flowers On Their Path 58'  - 2023  - Arts Perchés
    Synopsis

This documentary tells the extraordinary tale of a group of artists coming together with people suffering from mental disorders to work on a collective creation. As the days go by, talents are revealed, life stories are shared, the impediments of illness fade and under the impetus of art, differences are transformed into assets.

By following this unusual artistic initiative, this documentary hopes to change our view of mental illness and open up, through the magic of creation, the possibility of another way of living together.

In the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, the artists from the Kiribil company immersed themselves in the Etxea nursing home in Anglet, where people suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism live. For twelve months, the artists, the residents of the home and the medical team took part in an artistic adventure, the outcome of which was uncertain. Immersed alongside them, we experienced, from the inside, the three creative residencies that culminated in a series of exhibition-performances staged in cultural centres in the Basque country. We watched as connections were made, talents were revealed, tongues loosened and self-esteem restored. Some residents agreed to tell their stories, their precious words shedding light on the path traveled by revealing the obstacles created by mental illness.

Beyond the differences, beyond the fear, beyond everything we’ve been told about mental health issues, at the end of this adventure, the pleasures of creating something with others stand out like flowers on their path.
