It is to the Iberian Peninsula of the end of the Middle Ages that Jordi Savall transports us today, thanks to a concert dominated by music typical of this period: the folía.Folía is a dance of Portuguese origin, whose name could be translated as “unbridled fun” or “madness”. First associated with popular figures (shepherds, peasants, etc.), this style was assimilated into the court repertoire. One thing leads to another and the folía punctuates noble marriages and births of the 16th and 17th centuries. These are instrumentalists from the Hespèrion XXI ensemble who accompany Jordi Savall here: Xavier Díaz-Latorre (vihuela and guitar), Andrew Lawrence-King (Spanish baroque harp), Xavier Puertas (violin) and Pedro Estevan (percussion). Throughout the concert, the maestro also demonstrates all his talent as a musician by handling two period instruments: a treble viol and a viola da gamba, both from the 16th century.
