In 16th century Scotland, the secret romance between Edgardo and Lucia, sister of the sinister Enrico Ashton, falls victim to the hatred that consumes the Ashton and Ravenswood clans. But Edgardo and Lucia swear that nothing will get the better of their love, and exchange rings and vows of devotion. Enrico, however, manages to convince Lucia of her lover's infidelity by showing her a forged letter, with the aim of getting her to marry the man he has chosen for her, Arturo Bucklaw. Convinced of her lover's disloyalty, Lucia complies and signs the marriage contract. Edgardo is presented with a fait accompli, and without understanding, denies her charge of infidelity, cursing Lucia for breaking their vows to each other. Lucia marries Arturo, but starts to lose her sanity: during her wedding, she savagely stabs the husband she hates, and sinking into madness, relives her past happiness before collapsing. Learning of her death, Edgardo, who has now found out about the plot and its fatal consequences, stabs himself with his dagger to be with her in heaven.
