In a Tyrolean village, in the 17th century, Luisa, daughter of the old soldier Miller, and Rodolfo, son of Count Walter, are in a doomed relationship. The count reigns harshly over the region. He intends to marry his son to Duchess Federica. But Rodolfo swears to marry Luisa and threatens to reveal that his father murdered his own cousin to usurp his titles and power. When Miller is arrested for offending his lord, Wurm, the earl's steward, suggests a way that Luisa, with whom he is in love, can save her father. He convinces her to write a letter in which she admits to being in love with Wurm and having sought Rodolfo for his wealth. Reading this letter plunges Rodolfo into despair. He agrees to marry Federica, but leaves the ceremony to join Luisa and find out if she really betrayed him. Rodolfo prepares a glass of poison for himself and Luisa to drink. On the verge of succumbing to the poison, Luisa tells him the truth. Desperate, he has time to run Wurm through with his sword, before joining her in death.
