The action takes place in Nagasaki Bay, Japan, around 1900. Pinkerton, an American naval officer, meets his future wife Cio-Cio-San – known as Madame Butterfly – a fifteen-year-old geisha, whose family disapproves of the marriage. Sharpless, the United States consul, advises Pinkerton against this union. However, on their wedding night, Pinkerton sets the young girl's heart ablaze as she shyly responds to his love, before giving herself to him totally. Three years pass. Back in the United States, Pinkerton has sent no word to Butterfly, who continues to wait for his return, convinced that her lieutenant will come and find her... and discover the young son she has had by him. Sharpless, who knows that Pinkerton has built a life in his own country and is now married, asks Butterfly what she would do if he never came back. She would kill herself, replies the geisha: the fatal gesture that she commits when she learns the truth, during the late but long-awaited return of Pinkerton, who has come to collect the child in the company of his American wife.
