Nemorino, a naive and shy young villager, is in love with the beautiful Adina, a rich, arrogant and educated heiress. Disdained by the young girl, Nemorino buys a “magic elixir” from a charlatan, Doctor Dulcamara. The “elixir” is actually a bottle of cheap wine, which makes the gullible Nemorino unusually happy and curiously indifferent when he learns of Adina's forthcoming marriage to a smug fop, Sergeant Belcore. To earn enough money to buy another bottle of the precious potion, Nemorino enlists in his rival’s regiment. A providential inheritance will unravel the threads of this delightful sentimental comedy: Nemorino becomes rich and is able to marry Adina, thus proving the effectiveness of Dulcamara’s famous “elixir of love”.
