Inspired by Bruegel the Elder’s painting, the choreographer Olivia Grandville has created a piece for 10 dancers. Wearing headphones, they all follow her instructions.
The Fight Between Carnival and Lent... Who doesn’t know this busy scene by Pieter Bruegel, which depicts the meeting between abstinence and excess within the setting of a village festival?
Olivia Grandville - one of the most talented and surprising choreographers of her generation – has built an amazing piece around this famous oil-on-panel work.
It’s a profoundly contemporary piece that has "invented" a unique composition device. The ten performers are equipped with headphones, which allow the choreographer to give them whispered instructions. The dancer-performers then interpret the gestures, actions or situations given them, to create a living and constantly moving tableau.
Lines of force emerge, lines of flight… a magical organization of chaos. And the joy of seeing ten artists bursting from the confines of the stage in a dance as generous and abundant as Vivaldi's Summer.
Performance recorded during the prestigious Lyon Dance Biennial.
